As per Shankara Digvijayam, Shankara chose Kedar Dham for Shiv leen. Lord Shiva descended at Kedar to escort Shankara to Shiva’s abode Kailash. Kedarnath temple stood as testimony to this last sojourn of Shankar to merge in Shiv.
Few years back by Shankaracharya of Dwarka and Jyothir Peeth Shri Swaroopanand Maharaj Ji along with the Kedarnath temple, there was also a Sri Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi behind it, which was rebuilt a few years back and had statues of Adi Shankaracharya and a spathik linga. The entire structure of Samadhi, Statue of Shankaracharya and spathik ling which was rebuilt recently by Shankaracharya of Dwarka and Jyothir Peeth was called as Shankara Samadhi behind Kedar Temple.
